Pestalotiopsis sensu lato comprende tres géneros—Neopestalotiopsis, Pseudopestalotiopsis y Pestalotiopsis sensu stricto—establecidos a través de análisis fitopatógenos basados en la subunidad grande de la región del ARN ribosómico nuclear (LSU) y anamorfos asexuales. Los anamorfos asexuales en estos géneros producen acérvulas que consisten en conidios fusoides o elipsoide a subcilíndricos con cinco células, incluida una célula apical con apéndices, una célula basal con un apéndice y tres células medianas colocadas juntas con distintos colores (Kang et al., 1999Maharachchikumbura et al., 2014; Nozawa et al., 2018).

Síntomas

Los síntomas de la enfermedad se manifiestan como necrosis internerval de las hojas basales, marchitamiento y muerte de la planta. La enfermedad causa decoloración o áreas necróticas marrones en la corona y la raíz de la frutilla. El desarrollo de las plantas es lento, el crecimiento es retardado y el enraizamiento es pobre. Los trasplantes se ven débiles y pueden morir. Es difícil distinguir visualmente entre Pestalotiopsis clavispora y Phytophthora cactorum.
